7 Tips to Follow When Traveling to Greece for the First Time

Recently, I went on a trip to a destination on everyone’s bucket list: Greece!!

It was everything you could imagine, and we here to let you in on all the details. In addition, we’ve composed a list of 10 tips that

will be helpful when traveling to Greece for the first time.

1. Prepare carefully for your flight.

If you are flying from Europe, you have nothing to worry about - a few hours and you are there. But if you are from the East Coast of the of the United States

Take all your patience with you to enjoy this wonderful country later.

2. Try to Learn Basic Greek

Of course, whenever you are traveling to another country, it is important to show respect, and this can be done by

learning some basic conversational words. That way, you at least appear like you are trying, and most people can

appreciate that. We will list just a few below that you can used during two weeks stent:

  • Kalimera = Good Morning
  • Kalispera = Good Afternoon
  • Efharisto = Thank you
  • Parakalo = Please
  • Kaffe's = Coffee
  • Yamas = Cheers

3. Exchange Your Money for Cash when going to the Islands

Have you ever heard the saying “cash is king!” Well, l “cash is king!” If you aren’t planning to stay

in Athens for your trip, then just know that cash (Greece uses the Euro) is the preferred method of

payment. Notice that there were not a lot of ATMs on the Islands.

If you find yourself needing to take out cash, then try to use a Eurobank ATM. This ATM has the best exchange

rate. You can also ask your bank if they have an exchange rate so you can exchange funds prior to leaving for your trip.

4. There is no such thing as splitting the bill

…. well actually there is.

If you are from the US then you are used to the custom of splitting the bill with a group of friends but, in Greece if you

ask to split the bill be ready for funny looks or ones that resemble annoyance. Our recommendation is to bring cash

when in large groups. So when the bill comes, you are able to pay your portion.

You will be able to use a credit/debit card but the preferred method is cash.

5. Sundress Season is Year-Round

It is very hot in Greece. Most days, You will have to apply sunscreen twice a day or more along with your sunglasses.

There are many shops that sell cotton clothing. We would suggest you purchase just a few because the cotton will catch

most of your sweat. In addition, cotton clothing allows the island breeze to pass through your clothes.

We would advise against wearing jeans or tight clothing because it could cause chaffing. For girls, sundresses are the way

to go. They are simple and easy to wear. You can also get a lot of them in your suitcase if you are staying in Greece for

longer than 11 days.

6. Bring Your Own Beach Towel

Visiting the beach.. well, of course, you will need a beach towel but don’t expect your hotel or hostel to provide it for

you. Due to the climate and rationing of water, many hotels won’t have washer machines for you to wash your clothes.

They also don’t have the ability to provide you with beach towels that would need to be washed on a regular basis. For

this reason, bring your own towel.

Since COVID-19 is romping around and doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon, refusing to provide patrons with a

beach towel could also be a measure to prevent the spread of this virus. Either way, having your own beach towel is a

must.

7. Wifi can be Spotty

Greece is home to over 300 islands and they all have different Wifi connection abilities. On the island of

Paros, the wifi connection severely lacking but on the Mykonos wifi connection is  super.

Wifi speed and connection don’t dictate how well the island is developed. So, don’t go thinking that Paros is less

developed than Mykonos.
