And why you should definitely consider doing it.
I HAVE HEARD YOU SHOULD WRITE DAILY, HAVEN’T YOU?
It’s been quite a while since I've started reading and writing on Medium. Sometimes this question pops up in my head—“Should I write an article per day?”
I was in a dilemma and probably some self-doubt too—Will it be sustainable? Will I be able to do it? Where will the ideas come from to keep pace with that?
Then I reminded myself of what had happened to me on Twitter.
So let’s start from the start. On Twitter there is something called a “vss365” hashtag — “vss” stands for “very short story” and “365” represents every day of the year. This is a prompt hashtag quite popular among the Writing Community on the platform.
A PROMPT HASHTAG. NOW, WHAT’S THAT? In case you are unfamiliar, there is a host for the duration of 15 days, and every day they post a tweet containing a prompt word. Here’s an example.
Everyone who wants to participate has to craft a story (or a poem) and that must have the prompt word included. That is it.
This was my first entry for #vss365 — it’s from June 23 as you can see.
And this is my most recent one — of September 18, the day I’m writing this article.
Yes, I’ve not missed a single day in between. Looking back on this gives me some moments of pride.
If I were to assign a reason to why I never skipped a day, I will probably give credit to the daily new prompt words that were assigned.
“But how this relate to writing on Medium,” you may ask. Well, with some minor tweaks, I— and you too — can make it work on Medium. And here is how.
First of all commit to yourself that you’ll try to write at least one article per day. this isn’t to achieve some sort of a milestone — and you should not consider it one either — for most of your writes can make absolutely no sense. And that’s totally okay! It’s just to keep your creative juices flowing.
Discover and follow at least one publication every day. Figure out which kind of articles they accept. What are the topics they are interested in? If that interests you too…well, what are you waiting for? Use it as your prompt.
Write an article and submit it. Don’t obsess over if it will be published or not — after all your target should be to write one article per day and not to publish one article per day.
I have committed the same. Let’s see if it works out on Medium. Hope you enjoyed reading and found it helpful.
Here’s one more article you can read. I promise you will find this one interesting!
